Get started in 4 steps

  1. 1

    Install

Install File Transfer on your phone and computer from the Download section.

  2. 2

    Same Wi‑Fi

Connect both devices to the same Wi‑Fi (or let the computer join the phone’s hotspot).

  3. 3

    Open & pick a device

Nearby devices show up automatically. Not there? Tap “+” and enter the IP shown on the other device.

  4. 4

    Send & receive

Pick files (or drag & drop on the computer); the receiver taps Accept. Connect once to auto‑accept next time.

Works both ways

Phone → computer

On the phone: Send → Nearby → pick your computer. Files land in Downloads/File Transfer.

Computer → phone

On the computer: click Send files on the phone’s card, or drop files/folders onto it.

Phone ↔ phone

Android and iPhone see each other like any other device.

Install notes

Android
Install from Google Play. Keep the app open while transferring.
iPhone / iPad
The .ipa is not on the App Store yet: install it with AltStore or Sideloadly using your Apple ID. Allow “Local Network” on first launch. Received files are in Files → On My iPhone → File Transfer.
macOS
Open the .dmg and drag File Transfer to Applications. First launch: right‑click → Open → Open (not notarized yet). Allow “Local Network” and “Incoming connections” when asked.
Windows
Run the .msi. If SmartScreen warns: More info → Run anyway. When Windows Firewall asks, tick “Private networks” and Allow.
Linux
sudo apt install ./FileTransfer-*.deb (or dnf install ./*.rpm). With a firewall: sudo ufw allow 8080/tcp && sudo ufw allow 8889/udp.

FAQ

The other device does not show up?

Make sure both are on the same Wi‑Fi and the app is open on both. Guest / café Wi‑Fi often isolates clients — add the device by IP with “+” or use the phone’s hotspot.

Do files go through the Internet?

No. Files travel directly on your local network via port 8080 (HTTP) and 8889 (UDP discovery); nothing is uploaded to a server.

Where are received files saved?

Computer: Downloads/File Transfer (configurable in Settings). Android: photos/videos in DCIM/Camera, other files in Download/FileTransfer. iPhone: Files app → File Transfer.

What if Wi‑Fi drops mid‑transfer?

The transfer pauses and resumes by itself when the network is back (up to 10 minutes) — no need to start over.

Is there a dark mode?

Yes. Every app (Android, iPhone, Mac, Windows, Linux) has light and dark themes and follows the system by default; on computers and iPhone you can pin one in Settings → Appearance.

Does the app update itself?

Yes. The desktop app checks for a new version at launch (can be turned off in Settings), installs it with one “Update now” click and reopens. Android updates through Google Play; the iPhone app tells you when a new build is out and opens this page.

Is there a size limit?

No limit on file size or count; speed depends on your Wi‑Fi router.
